Mix, bake, and enjoy again and again and again.

does your tongue get cold?

After I dried off Daria from her nightly bath, she had her towel in her mouth.
Me: Why do you have the towel in your mouth?

Her: My tongue is cold.

Me: Okay.

What do you say after that?

It was SAT Saturday again!

I volunteered to supervise SAT testing AGAIN this morning. Each time I give this test, every group has trouble with writing a simple sentence in cursive and signing their name. Why? What is happening in the schools? Where did cursive handwriting go?? One kid wrote his home address and no sentence, and 2 other kids asked if they could finish writing after the test. I had to look like a super bitch and say 'no' because SAT testing has such crazy strict rules.

And speaking of the rules....have I mentioned how many rules and restrictions must be read and repeated during this test?? I should just put on the board - "don't even ask, the answer is probably NO." And I am not even as bad as the person who is in charge of the testing at this center! The boss covered me for a break, and boss was all over a couple of kids for having their calculators out in a non-math section. Just call me "hard-ass" because I am sure that is what the students were mumbling under their breath.

The good news is I was able to browse through 2 cookbooks and 3 magazines during the entire test period (4+hrs). I found some excellent recipes and cute ideas for treats for Valentine's day - heart shaped brownies!

While I was stuck in the stuffy lecture hall, Daria stayed the night at my parent's on Friday and played her Saturday away. She was so excited to go there on Friday afternoon that she was in excellent behavior all morning long. When I dropped her off, she told me I could leave and come back tomorrow after lunch. (we already discussed that part.) Of course, when I went to pick her up today, she did not want to go. There was yelling and lots of "NO, Mommy!" I just love showing my parents I have no control over my child. Finally, I convince her to leave, and she jumps around in the car and will NOT sit in her flippin' carseat. I was so happy to bring this child home, goodie for me. When I finally persuaded her to sit down, Daria decided it was a good time to howl like a freak. My parents are standing in their garage waving, and probably thinking how great that noise is driving away. As soon as we pulled out of the driveway, the freak howl ceased, and it was silent all the way home.

Of course, home was a whole new battle and new screams and tears. Did I mention how quiet it was Friday night here? It was nice and relaxing. Although, I will admit, I completely miss Daria when I go past her room at night and she is not there. It just does not feel right for her door to be open and her not in her bed. She did manage to tell me how much fun she had at Pappa's, and she likes staying the night there, and she missed Mommy and Daddy. And that made it all good!

5 weird things

I volunteered myself to be tagged from Andie D.

Topic: 5 weird things the Internet world does not know about me

Note: cannot guarantee everyone will find these weird

1. All my clothes in my closet are organized by color and type of clothing. I have kept my closet like this since I was 12 when I learned my best friend's older sister organized her closet in this manner. Currently the order from left to right goes blue, purple, green, brown, khaki, gray, black, and red.

2. I have over 33 videotapes of Simpsons' episodes dating back to when the series began. On most of the early tapes (1-20), I have each episodes summary and number written on the case or piece of paper inside. There is also a folder with lists of which episodes are on what tapes. And some tapes have NO commercials.

3. When Daria and I go on neighborhood walks, I always try to pet any cat that crosses our path. However, I always stress we never go up to dogs we do not know.

4. 2/3 of the herbs I grow in my little garden I hardly use, but I like to talk about my garden like I use everything in it. There is no excuse except for laziness on my part. This year I am going to do a better job at utilizing what I have and using them in recipes and projects. We'll see how that works out.

5. When I was 11, we went to Disneyland, and I had each character sign my hat. The hat was a Def Leppard white baseball hat with about 8 signatures on it. I thought I was so cool, but the pictures prove I was a complete dork. (I just cannot bring myself to post the pic, sorry.)

Tag away.

oh how I love mondays

This is why I love Mondays:
went to take Daria to school this morning and my car would not start.
I drove it yesterday and all was grand.
luckily, Micah was home, so we took his car.
BUT he had NO - I mean below E - GAS in his car.
I rushed to get gas before preschool because I knew I would not make it all the way there.
I was cursing (in my head) all the way there because I had this fear I would run out of gas before getting to the station.
happily, we made it to school on time.
listen to the school schedule for the week:
today: pajama party and classmate birthday party
Wednesday: pancake party at teacher B's house
Friday: fieldtrip to the zoo.
this evening: Daria informs me she has a tickle in her throat with a dramatic cough.
let's hope it does not develop into something we all catch.
back to my car - Micah learns that a bolt from my starter fell out and that is why it did not start.
did I mention my car was just in the shop last Monday for a tune up? And it cost a lot more than we were expecting??
good part: new bolt only costs $4.00.
bad news: had to take Daria to Target with me because I could not go while she was in school.
however I filled that fun time at home with laundry!
shopping at Target sucked because Daria was so attracted to all the Valentine's Day stuff and the toys and anything else that was at her level.
damn colorful merchandise.
the afternoon took a turn for the worse when Daria woke up from her nap - she actually slept an hour and a half today - and she went into full crying and yelling mode.
she did not want to do anything, not even to get a snack.
this lasted for about 20+ minutes until finally she realized she wanted a snack and had to stop all sound coming from her to get it.
eventually the madness calmed down and it was getting closer to dinner time.
and after dinner means we so much closer to bedtime.
thankfully, the evening ended without anymore meltdowns from any humans in the households.
bedtime was fuss-free, so she is probably coming down with something.

oh yeah, before I forget:
not that I am a big football fan, I cannot believe the Seahawks are going to the Superbowl.
since I was 10 years old, I have heard that "this year could be the year," and 22 years later it is finally the truth.
this will be the first year I will pay any attention to the game and the commercials.

Thank you Andie D.!

c'mon buy some of these t-shirts

I recently discovered this cool place called cafepress to make your own t-shirts, buttons, stickers, and CD's. You do not have to put any of your own cash up to make the shirts. You just need to design the art and music and set up an account to sell your ideas. I think this is great because there is no out of pocket expense from us - which always makes me happy.

The reason I am sharing this information with all of my wonderful readers is because Micah now has his own marketplace at cafepress. He is selling t-shirts, buttons, stickers, and very soon CD's with his music. This music project is called 'Town of Dying Slowly', and the logo has the backdrop of downtown Tacoma on it. He designed the art and music himself, and we are so thrilled we have it out there for the Internet world to buy and buy and buy.

Side note: to listen to Micah's music - you have to go to myspace - town of dying slowly - however, you have to have myspace account to listen, which I think is so lame. I think Daria is on one of the songs singing.

I am thinking about starting my own marketplace, but there will be no music on there. I would love to make some bumper stickers and a couple of shirts - more of that to come.

I wish I was making this up

This is a true story that happened this afternoon.
Message left on our answering machine by my older sister (16 yrs. my elder): "Hi, Adria. Um..we are sitting here watching a DVD on my widescreen TV. The DVD is widescreen and when we played it there were black lines on the top and bottom of the screen. Can you call me back and tell me how to get them off the screen?"

Can you put your family members on ebay?

giant alien jellyfish

All this is random. Enjoy!

Watch out! The 440 pound jellyfish are here. (well, not in this country, but still.)

But these live in California! (well, if you are a cave.)

Everyone has to start watching Arrested Development before the horrible decision makers take it away . Please Save Our Bluths!

tidbits

Tonight, I made these muffins in the jumbo muffin pan. I love that pan - there is nothing better than a jumbo muffin to bring joy to the day. This is one of the simplest muffin recipes and so delicious. Try it and have some muffin joy.

I love the first episodes of American Idol! I am simply amazed by the youth in our country. WOW!

Tomorrow, Daria has her 5 year well-check with her doctor. I was told there will be no shots - let's hope there are no surprises. And let's hope Daria will read the eye chart this year. She has good eye sight, but last year, she refused to read the chart. The nurse then asked me if she knew her shapes - which she does but she was being 'shy' when the nurse was talking to her. I was sure the whole thing was getting marked down in her chart.

The season premiere of 24 rocked!! Are you watching? The best real time show in the whole world! There is so much scandal and drama. Yippie! I cannot wait until next Monday night.

Things that have made my week way too stressful:
1. my mom is still in town until Friday
2. my 2 older half-sisters (on my mom's side) are being total b#!$hes to my mom, which made her sob on my couch Saturday morning
3. mom sobbing because of my lame sisters
4. took car for tune-up and the cost was over double than I was expecting- however, the car is running much better
5. I hate cars
6.trying to understand the language of HTML

Good things:
1. jumbo muffins
2. I still have a Target gift card to use from my birthday
3. mom goes back home on Friday
4. Skoonus turns 12 tomorrow
5. toffee caramel hot cocoa - left over from Christmas

a walk down memory lane

Our good friends found this photo of us from July 1997. Look how young we look! And look how long Micah's hair is! As of that date, we were living together for one month. Ahhh...the bliss of yesteryear. As I look at this picture, I cannot remember owning the shirt I am wearing. And to be honest I have not stopped thinking about the origin of this shirt since I saw the photo.

update

Daria lost her 2nd tooth yesterday. It was the other bottom front tooth. This one had a lot more blood involved and sensitivity. I will admit it grossed me out. We are keeping the tooth fairy in business. She left monster stickers this time, and Daria was so pleased.

My mom is coming to visit for a week starting tomorrow. It will be nice to see and visit with her, but I am bracing myself for the family drama rollercoaster that will take off for the next 7 days.

It is day 25 of the rain. The record is 33 days straight of rain. I do not know if we will get there. Our yard is a mud pit, and there is standing water on the sidewalks.

Lost rocked last night! That was a very good episode - I love Mr. Ekio, my new favorite character!

The wait is almost over - Jack Bauer returns Sunday!!! No calls after 8PM because I will be sitting on the edge of my seat.

oh my

I really was not shocked when I heard this story about Arnold.
What the hell??

why

I received this in my e-mail this afternoon. It simply amazed me how many I do everyday, especially the one regarding the food in the frig!
How many 'why's' are related to your life?

Why, Why, Why

Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak?
Why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know there is not enough?
Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?
Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle?
Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection?
Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?
Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him?
Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?
Whose idea was it to put an "S" in the word "lisp"?
If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?
Why is it that no matter what color bubble bath you use the bubbles are always white?
Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale?
Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?
Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?
Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try?How do those dead bugs get into those enclosed light fixtures?
When we are in the supermarket and someone rams our ankle with a shopping cart then apologizes for doing so, why do we say, "It's all right?" Well, it isn't all right, so why don't we say, "That hurt, you stupid idiot?"
Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over?
In winter why do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?
How come you never hear father-in-law jokes?
And my FAVORITE......
The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends -- if they're okay, then it's you.

23+ days of rain

This is our 23rd consecutive day of rain in the lovely pacific northwest. Now, I am not complaining because I would much rather have rain than ice and/or snow. But c'mon - I am so sick of cleaning off mud from my kitchen floor!

what does your birthdate say about you?

Okay I am quiz silly right now. Here is what my birthdate says about me. I never knew the dove was my power symbol. Maybe that is what has been missing these days - the dove.

Your Birthdate: December 27

You are a spiritual soul - a person who tries to find meaning in everything.

You spend a good amount of time meditating, trying to figure out life.

Helping others is also important to you. You enjoy social activities with that goal.

You are very generous and giving. Yet you expect very little in return.

Your strength: Getting along with anyone and everyone

Your weakness: Needing a good amount of downtime to recharge

Your power color: Cobalt blue

Your power symbol: Dove

Your power month: September

which literary archetype are you?

I took this literary archetype quiz, and this is the answer that appeared. Who are you??

Which Literary Archetype are You?

Osiris and Isis: The Messiah and the Punisher

You are the best friend anyone could ever have. The Messiah is a very good archetype to have; it can encompass almost every other archetype, and is both loved and hated in life. In times of pressure, you are the one who leads people down the right path. You are a born leader, and you only feel right when you are leading. In literature, this archetype is often connected to the Divine, and is often charged with an important task. In real life, Messiahs often preach beliefs, and lead people with these beliefs. He is automatically opposed to the evils in life, and often spends his life fighting them. Leaders of resistance movements are usually classified as Messiahs, and the people under them look up to them as near-gods. Your greatest and simplest motivation is to be a big part of something bigger and more importatnt than yourself. Messiahs are often buffetted by the amount of pressure put on them, and are sometimes opposed to accepting the responsibility; but if you are truly a Messiah, you will accept any responsibility as long as it is for the benefitnof your beliefs and the followers of those beliefs.

Messiahs probably have the most trouble in romantic relationships, but you should try to pair up with "The Mystic"; not for any strong reason, but this match is the most compatible. Messiahs usually help others to grow, not the other way around.

The Negative of the Messiah is the Punisher. Of the dark archetypes, the Punisher is one of the more benign types. The Punisher is the one who will push someone down just to teack them to get back up. To make a reference to The Chronicles of Riddick, the Furians (all Punishers) may try to strangle a newborn with its own umbilical cord-- if the baby can save itself, it deserves to live. Punishers pursue the same end as Messiahs, but with less compassionate means. Punisher don't care about the emotions of their followers. In fact, they try to break people's spirits, which makes them better followers.

A well known Messiah is Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) from Star Wars. He doesn't know his own importance, but in the end, everyone is following him.

polar bears on oprah

After reading this, I was wondering when Oprah will have the polar bears on??? Poor polar bears.

t.f.

Daria, finally, lost her loose tooth!! (location:front, bottom, left) It came out last night, and when she crawled in our bed at 6 AM this morning, she brought it with her and laid on top of it. When we woke up at 7:30, she told me she lost her tooth. I asked her where it was at, and she told me she left it mommy's bed. We rushed back upstairs to search for it before Micah rolled on it or the cat batted it out of the bed. It was right where she left it on the bed.

The first thing she wanted to do was get it ready for the tooth fairy. She put it in her tooth fairy pillow, and this evening we set on a shelf in the living room so the tooth fairy could find it. Daria really wanted to leave it under her pillow, but I convinced her the tooth fairy would be able to find it easier if she left it downstairs close to the front door. She bought it - thank goodness because I did not want the stress of trying to sneak into her room and not wake her while I was digging under her pillow.

Earlier today I was having the hugest dilemma on what the tooth fairy should leave Daria. I have heard many different items that her cousins and friends have received from her - everything from $5.00 to small toy bear. The good news is the pocket on her tooth fairy pillow is small, and I told her the prize will be something that fits inside the pocket on the pillow. Again she bought it. I was in a toss up between small toy or $1.00. I adventured to one of my favorite bargain stores, Big Lots!, and I found this cute heart bracelet for a dollar! And it will fit in the pocket! Yippy! I think the tooth fairy did good.

sunday dinner

Tonight's dinner was a new recipe - "chicken" garlic pizza

I used Quorn "chicken" style tenders for the chicken part of the recipe, and I doubled the garlic, like the reviews suggested. This was the first time I ever used Quorn products, and I am super pleased with the results. I made my own pizza dough using spelt flour and I added herbs and Parmesan cheese to the dough. It needs to be noted that this was one of the best pizzas I have ever made!!

Daria's book spree

I did not realize that the book, Scooby Doo and the Monster of Mexico , Daria picked out today from Border's was about El Chupacabra.
The other 3 books Daria picked out:
Care Bears - What Makes You Happy? - The Care Bears are the new big thing in Daria's world these days.
A book about Sharks! - not this particular book.
How a Seed Grows this was her 4th choice.
After we purchased her books, we went to the coffee shop. Me: soy hazelnut latte. Daria: cinnamon raisin bagel. She went through each book as we sat and enjoyed our treats. She "read" each book to me twice, and she made up little sub-stories about each species of shark. It was the best coffee date I had in months.

Happy New Year!!

Besides eating better, exercising more, and trying to save more money, my new year's resolution is to learn how to pronounce dinosaur names CORRECTLY.
Daria has a new love for dinosaurs, and I truly hate it when she asks me "what is this one called?"
Is there a phonics books on dinosaur names?? I need that book.

Here are some things I made for our new year's celebration:
white russian shakes
warm crab parmesan dip - added a can of diced jalapenos
creamy garlic dip
plus chips, pretzels, and bagel bites
giant calzone with provolone cheese, soy sausage, and olives
Micah cooked up kielbasa for him and his friend.

I have spent most of the first day of 2006 cleaning and eating all the leftover dip and ice cream. I do not feel good about this because it is not following the resolution of eating better. Although, I did exercise this morning, but I have eaten those calories back twice or more by now. Tomorrow will be the day I begin the eating better part of my resolution. Wish me luck...
